    A Life At Stake

    (Cairo- November 8, 2004)

Twenty one Egyptian Human Rights Organizations Hold the Tunisian Government Fully Responsible for al-Zoghlamy's Life

Twenty one human rights organizations condemned today the continuation of the repressive practices of the totalitarian Tunisian authorities against the Tunisian activist Galal al-Zoghlamy. Such practices are constituted in bringing false charges against him and depriving him from his right to fair trial, which led to his going on a hunger strike in rejection to these practices since the 1st of November.

In a rapid and perilous development, al-Zoghlamy was referred to a Tunisian court with the false charges brought against him by the Tunisian government. The judges before whom he appeared lacked the minimum standards of fairness and impartiality, they undertake a defense for the Tunisian government's practices and did not pay attention to al-Zoghlamy's defense council. They deliberately exhausted him, sentenced him to four- months in prison in addition to another eight months for another charge among a total of eleven false charges. Obviously he was punished for his returning from France, where he censured the Tunisian government's repressive practices.

The Egyptian Human Rights Organizations' Collective and the undersigned organizations assert that they, along side with the sentenced activist and all the pro-freedom of expression in Tunisia, will keep exposing the Tunisian government's authoritarian practices, as well as exposing those writers who connive with the chief repressive government in the Arab region, that government which puts its people in iron.

The undersigned organizations hold the Tunisian president Ben Aly fully responsible for the safety of al-Zoghlamy. And affirm that there is no alternative but to release al-Zoghlamy, drop all the false charges against him and stop harassing the Tunisian activists.
