| Libya :Human Rights Must be considered
Stop Exceptional Trials and Release Expression Prisoners NOW
Cairo on 23rd of November 2004
The Coalition of the Egyptian Human Rights' Organizations has Confirmed today that the Libyan trial to be hold tomorrow to all 86 prisoners accused of belonging to the Islamic Group (Islamic Brothers) is an unfair trial based on unfair laws that totally contradict with Human Rights, that the Libyan Government pretends to respect.
Those prisoners that been arrested in 1998,were sentenced in front of what so-called(The People's Court), a political exceptional Court that criminals all kinds of parties activities in Libya.
In 2002, The "People's Court" had issued severe sentences against those prisoners; two were sentenced to death, Seventy three were sentenced to life-time imprisonment and other eleven were sentenced to ten years imprisonment.
Though the appealing request was so much prolonged but fortunately, it was accepted to be re-considered tomorrow Wednesday the 24th of November 2004.
Such cruel and inhuman sentences is an obvious violation to all The International Laws and constitutions that call upon justice and fair trials.
What increases the doubts about the integrity and honesty of this trial, is that such prisoners did not commit any violent actions, but Only expressed their own views ,and it is important to mention that there has been several requests to cancel the (People's Court) as it only represents a retrogression of Justice and Democracy values.
The undersigned organizations has confirmed that The Libyan nation is the only beneficiary of the President Qazzafi's efforts to make peace with the International Community. And that the presence of such Courts only proves the falseness of allegations of heading towards political reform. And re-affirmed that all citizens should have the freedom to express their own views as long as there are no practical violence involved.
"The Coalition of Egyptian Human Rights Organization" calls upon the Libyan President to fulfill his repeated promises of (Applying political reforms) and use his constitutional authorities to stop such unfair trials and release all the Libyan expression prisoners.
